La garde du comté échut à Jeanne de Fougères, veuve de Hugues XII. Ce mariage resta stérile, et Hugues XIII eut à choisir son successeur. En 1283, il institua pour héritier Guy alias "Guyard", son frère, et, à défaut de celui-ci, Guy, son oncle. En 1297, il déshérita Guyard au profit de Geoffroi de Lusignan, son cousin : le cas échéant, Geoffroi de Lusignan devait être remplacé par Aymar de Valence, puis par Renaud de Pons, et enfin par Amaury de Graon (cf.
