<p>At 17, Charlotte was married to Jean de Pas, lord of Feuqueres. He had served at the courts of two Catholic Valois kings, but had become a Protestant in 1560 and fought in the religious wars that began in 1562. </p><p><p>After their marriage, Feuqueres sent his wife to Sedan, in the northeast and under German Protestant control. </p></p><p><p>At the end of 1568 their daughter was born, but Feuqueres never saw her. He was killed in battle five months after her birth.</p></p><p></p>
