\cf5 \cb6 DeCost Smith, widely known painter of American Indian life, died at his home near Perry's Corners last Thursday after a brief illness. He had lived in Amenia for a number of years, since his retirement from active governmental work among Indian villages throughout the country. He was 75 years old. He was born Feb 1, 1864 in Skaneateles, NY, son of Edmund R & Elizabeth Mills Smith. He studied art in New York City and in Europe, and became interested in the American Indians while still in his youth. He served on Indian commissions under several presidential administrations, and spent many years living on reservations. He was honored many times for his paintings, which embodied a graphic and colorful style. He came to Amenia about 10 years ago. Since his retirement, he had been engaged in research for various historical societies. His spacious studio, in the north part of the house, was a veritable museum of Indian relics, original paintings, and curios. Survived by two brothers, Burnett and Sedgwick Smith of Skaneateles, and a niece, Elizabeth C Sawtell, Sharon, Conn. His wife died in 1930.\cb1 \uc0\u8232 \cb6 Harlem Valley Times, 14 Dec 1939\

\cf0 \cb1 One of E. R.'s sons\'a0inherited his father's gifts with both words and picture making.\
DeCost Smith lived in Paris and New York City, and explored the American West numerous times, among the Indians. In 1890 he travelled with artist {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "http://www.askart.com/artist/Edwin_Willard_Deming/7521/Edwin_Willard_Deming.aspx"}}{\fldrslt \ul Edwin Deming}}, capturing Native American culture on canvas, even as it faded from history. He\'a0amassed a collection of important artifacts from the Souix,\'a0Crow,\'a0Onondaga Indians, and more importantly, first-hand accounts of their tribes\'a0and tribulations\'a0as\'a0the\'a0New\'a0World\'a0\uc0\u8232 expanded. He\'a0served on the Bureau of Indian Affairs under President Theodore\'a0Roosevelt and others. Having met Sitting Bull, Rain-in-the-Face and many other legendary Indians, he penned two books on his expeditions.\
DeCost Smith claimed in his autobiography {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "https://kihm6.wordpress.com/2012/06/21/only-a-violet/"}}{\fldrslt \ul Red Indian Experiences }}to have\'a0become smitten with Native Americans when, as a youngster, an OnondagaIndian with her papoose\'a0came knocking at the back door of 28 West Lake Street.\
His other book, {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/decost-smith/martyrs-of-the-oblong-and-little-nine/"}}{\fldrslt \ul Martyrs of the Oblong and the Little Nine}}, is known as the true story of the "Last of theMohicans."\'a0\
His writing,\'a0painting and collections\'a0documented the fast-disappearing culture as the West was "won". His painting "Conflicting Faiths" was exhibited at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1889.\'a0Smith donated that to the Skaneateles Library in 1907, where it can be seen today. A contemporary and collaborator of famed Western\'a0artist {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "http://www.frederic-remington.org/"}}{\fldrslt \ul Frederic\'a0Remington}}, (who, interestingly, also lived in an {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederic_Remington"}}{\fldrslt \ul A. His collection of Indian artifacts became part of the {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "http://www.nmai.si.edu/searchcollections/results.aspx?partyid=3893&src=1-2"}}{\fldrslt \ul Smithsonian}}.\'a0\'a0\
Some DeCost Smith works, discovered by collector Jonathan Holstein,\'a0can be seen {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "https://fourscore.smugmug.com/Art/DeCost-Smith-3/n-z94Xtt/"}}{\fldrslt \ul here}}.\'a0Smith's correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, notebooks, brochures, manuscripts, maps, paintings, and sketches are {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "http://rmc.library.cornell.edu/EAD/htmldocs/RMM09174.html"}}{\fldrslt \ul archived at Cornell University}}.\
The hand written journal of his 1907 trip, (pictured at right,) can be found\'a0in\'a0The Amenia Free Library, with two seldom seen paintings and a rare etching of three musicians, created for a collaborative work with his father "Ramblings About Town."\
